Water Tanks In Adelaide and SA

Congratulations Adelaide!

South Australia leads the way in terms of the percentage of homes with rainwater tanks with 48% of all South Australians with a rainwater tanks compared to 17% in other capitals.*

There is probably a good reason for that. First of all, South Australia is the driest state so water resources are always on everyones mind. Secondly, if you have ever tasted Adelaide mains water you will know why!

Lets go back to the first point about being the driest state. This is a question we often get asked:

"Why would I get a rain water tank in a drought?"

It's a good question really. Well the answer is in the statistics. If South Australia is the driest state. why do they have (by far) the highest percentage of tank ownership?

The fact is that it does rain. Australians really love the water and most people live around the coast. It's no coincidence that it rains more near the coast. Sure we sometimes get dry periods and below average rainfall sometimes but even if you had a 50% below average rainfall in South Australia, you would get over 250mm of rain each year. If you have a 200m² roof then that would give you over 50,000 litres of rainwater per year, or 25% of the total useage for an average home.

If you live in Adelaide or South Australia you can get some good rebates for water tanks. You can get up to $1000 for a new rainwater tank provide it is over 1000 Litres and connected to your plumbing.

New homes are not able to get the rebate as they are mandatory in new homes. Check with SA Water for more information about water tanks and rebates.

To have any kind of effect and long term cost savings you need at least 5000 Litres (some other states don't offer rebates for anything under 5000L)

To store 5000 litres in our Supertank water tanks you will need at least 13 Supertanks. Each tank holds 395 litres.
